What to wear for beach family photos.

The beach is a bright, simple background, so clothes do a lot of the work. A few choices make the difference between photos that feel calm and photos that look busy.

Colors

  • Soft, light colors (white, cream, sand, light blue, sage) sit naturally against sand and water.
  • Coordinate rather than match. Pick two or three colors and let everyone mix them.
  • Skip big logos, bright neon and busy small patterns. They pull the eye away from faces.

Fabrics and fit

  • Light, flowing fabrics move well in the breeze, which is nearly always there.
  • Avoid anything you'll be adjusting all session. If it rides up when you sit on the sand, choose something else.

Shoes and extras

  • Barefoot looks best on the sand. Bring shoes for the walk.
  • Bring a brush and something for flyaway hair.
  • Pets are welcome at no extra charge on my family sessions.

In the cooler months

Layers, sweaters and soft knits look great on the beach in winter, and the beach is quieter. Weather reschedules are free if a cold front or a storm rolls in.

Questions

Quick answers.

Should everyone wear white?

It works, but it can look flat. White or cream with one or two accent colors usually looks richer.
